- Find a hot niche market: The fun part of this is the research. You need to know what people are thinking and talking about so ………….sorry about this…………..you need to be aware of what is being discussed on morning television, in the newspapers, in weekly and monthly magazines, at golf, tennis and fishing clubs. Yes, I know such research will be onerous but you can’t expect to make a fortune without doing some hard work! Seriously, you do need to know what people want and this is a good starting point. Use the next couple of months to start tapping into trends in any area that interests you. When you get to the point of considering what internet strategies you will use you will be really glad you have done this. My wise old brother-in-law always says “ Time spent in recognisance is rarely wasted.”
- Give them what they want: You will use your experience and skills, and hopefully will incorporate your interests and passions, but basically you need to give the market what they want if you want to make money on the internet. People buy what they want, not what they need. In a later eclass I will tell you how to ascertain what people want in your chosen niche, but meanwhile keep on observing and noting trends.
- A powerful and compelling sales letter is essential to sell anything on the internet. Funnily enough ugly websites seem to sell products well, but engaging emotions in the buying process is essential. Start taking note of the sales letters that work for you. Commence a “swipe file”, that is the digital equivalent of a folder in the filing cabinet where you place examples of great marketing.
- Don’t worry about not having advanced technology skills. You really don’t need them. Even building websites is no longer the issue that it used to be, with several very economical solutions such as automatic web-building software, and inexpensive outsourcing. So long as you can use the computer at a fairly basic level you will have enough technological skills to build a great business.
- Internet traffic: You need people to visit your website to actually make any money, but there are many ways of driving internet traffic which I will share with you. This is an area where many Baby Boomers’ experience will be very beneficial, using the skills we have built up through our lives. Much of what is on the internet is rubbish when you really stop to look at it. If you can create genuine content and share it appropriately, the internet search engines will recognise that this is original work and this will improve your ranking. A higher ranking usually means more visitors to your site.
- Your list: You will need to develop a list of potential customers, and this will happen over time when you start your business ventures. But think about the starting point of your list now. Do you actually already have customers who would be interested in your future work? Recognise that you are now building the relationships that you can develop further in your retirement business ventures, and treat that list like gold!
