Employee to Entrepreneur
Change from Employee to Entrepreneur
For many people seeking Career Change the ultimate dream is to “Sack the Boss” and create their own business using their skills, their experiences and perhaps even some of their particular passions or interests.
This dream is often kept secret from family and friends, referred to only in casual remarks that are not meant to be taken seriously. Sometimes it even takes a while for a career counsellor to hear their clients most cherished dreams. Yet those dreams are your intuition telling you something. If you trust your own inner wisdom the messages are there for you to consider.
Self-imposed Barriers
Because people often have very strong ideas about what they are capable and worthy of achieving, they create barriers telling themselves that they “couldn’t do that” or “wouldn’t be able to make enough money” or “no-one would be interested”. They believe themselves to such an extent that they never check out the reality of what they believe, so their own beliefs are proven true! How much better would it be if you could move past those barriers and look at the possibilities.
The clues found within dreams
It is usually your dreams that contain the best clues to the work that you will find satisfying, and that will contain enough intrinsic motivation for you to do all the work that creating a business entails.
Discuss your business dreams with a trusted friend or family member and get them down on paper so you can start to expand the ideas. Look at the dream and consider what it is telling you. How can those dreams be adapted? How could they start small and be grown? What sort of life would they mean for you?
Fear Factor
Face your fears head on. Acknowledge them but don’t let them stop you from considering the possibilities. Recognise what are your personal barriers, and what are real factors which must be considered.
Employee mind set
If you make the decision to create your own business then you will need to undergo some changes in thinking, taking you from the mindset of an employee to that of someone who is self-employed. It is a big change in thinking and one that will only happen if you consciously recognise the ways in which you are still thinking like an employee and immerse yourself in reading about business, mixing with business people and generally starting to think about yourself as a business owner.
Need Support?
The change from employee to entrepreneur is a career change, and many people benefit from making this change with the support of a career counsellor with an interest in entrepreneurship.
You may benefit from discussing the way that your skills, experience and interests blend with the business idea you are considering. You may need some help changing your mind set from thinking like an employee to thinking like an entrepreneur. It may be the recognition of how your skills will transfer into the business world. Coaching support as you work through the early months of your business may also provide you with the motivation, drive and resilience that you need.
